What is SCIAW?
SCIAW is the Washington State organization for people with spinal cord injuries and for all committed to helping them.
SCIAW supports all of their interests, regardless of the cause of the injury or the severity of the impairment. We want to be the first and main resource for all people affected by spinal cord injury, as well as for the family and friends of the injured person.
SCIAW promotes and encourages people with spinal cord injury to thrive in society to the fullest extent possible.
We salute our SCIAW members, who lead dynamic and independent lives. Their attitude and spirit is reflected in our slogan: “Survive. Recover. Thrive.”
SCIAW is an important forum for sharing information and resources. It provides resources to help each survivor deal with the challenges posed by the injury. It fosters the building of a community devoted to helping one another. It strives to empower each person with the hope that our greatest dreams can be achieved regardless of our physical limitations.
SCIAW is the Washington state chapter for the internationally renowned Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation (CDRF). This partnership is a two-way street. SCIAW will work to advance and support the mission of the CDRF. And CDRF will provide resources and continue its extraordinary campaign to one day discover a cure for spinal cord injuries.
In a nutshell, we at SCIAW:
- Create a community of members who will help one another.
- Compile a database of human, medical and legal resources.
- Educating the legislature, private institutions, and the public on behalf of those with SCI and their families.
- Create broad awareness and understanding about the causes of SCI and the potential ramifications.
- Provide a full array of human, medical and legal resources to individuals and their families/friends, from when they first sustain a SCI and for their entire lives.
- Offer services that promotes independence despite having a SCI.
- Legislate on behalf of those with SCI and their families.
